The Saxon Harbor Boat Club was organized in 1974 to advance boating on Lake Superior through Saxon Harbor. It is made up of 200 members from all over the Midwest, however, the bulk of members are from Iron and Gogebic counties.
The Boat Club serves as the caretaker of the harbor and campground during the park's summertime operation. This includes serving as host to the campground and marina, lawn mowing, boat launching, cleaning, event sponsorship, building projects, and general park maintenance.
The Club’s prime focus is to reinvest its income back into the Saxon Harbor County Park. Each year the Club looks for projects to enhance the recreational experience for visitors to the park. Most recently the Club had committed funds to outfit the new pavilion that was built by Iron County in the fall of 2013. The new expanded Pavilion adds additional showers and bathrooms. It also has a fully functional kitchen. The pavilion is available for rental for parties, reunions, wedding or baby shower, or other events. To make a reservation please call the campground host by calling 715-893-2370.
Saxon Harbor offers 90full service boat slips, with 3 boat ramps, and transient docking with the availability of gasoline, a pump out station, restrooms, and showers. Past accomplishments include the building of a fish cleaning station. The purchase of a boat lift which allows larger and different boats to be launched, docked and stored at the marina increasing revenue for both the Club and the county. Seasonal, monthly, weekly, and daily slip rates are available. For monthly, weekly or transient docking call Bill at the Harbor Lights for availability and prices at 715-893-2242. For 2016 due to harbor expansion transient docking is limited so please call ahead for availability. The marina opens the beginning or end of May depending on harbor conditions and closes on October 15th each year.
The campground offers 43 campsites, 33 with electrical service, 5lake side tent sites, and 5 secluded walk-in tent sites. The campground offers water availability, restrooms, showers, dump station, and playground. Campers do have the availability to the pavilion and kitchen by contacting the campground host at the phone number listed above. Many children have enjoyed playing on the playground equipment purchased by the Club. For camping reservations or questions please see the link below.
The area around the park and marina has seen the addition of several permanent park benches. With the assistance of Iron County, the Boat Club built steps to docks and a new storage building.
The Club’s largest event is the annual Spring Classic Fishing Tournament with over 50 boats and hundreds of participants over a three day period in early June. The annual event includes boats of all sizes, with a Powder-puff tournament on Friday of the weekend.
The Saxon Harbor Boat Club’s supports the local fire departments and local charities with a focus on children, fishing and boating.
The Boat Club carries out its duties with countless hours of time and effort by the many volunteers who work to make the Saxon Harbor Boat Club successful. Each year it is volunteers that carry out the duties of the Club.
The Boat Club’s relationship with Iron County is a shining example of how public/private partnership can work for the benefit of all involved. Looking to the future, the Club is continuously working to increase the awareness and usage of this great resource and asset we all call Saxon Harbor.
